How To Pass Your Magic Ears Interview- 5 Tips From Interviewers!

If you are thinking of applying to Magic Ears, you will have to do a live interview or recorded demo after your application is accepted in order to move forward in the application process.

During your live interview or recorded demo, your performance will be critiqued on two things:

  1. Teaching personality- Magic Ears is looking for friendly, high energy teachers that create both an educational and fun learning experience. We call this "teaching with passion", and it is part of our company branding. Every student that attends class at Magic Ears expects to have a fun, educational experience.
  2. Teaching Skills- You should be able to display teaching skills such as making corrections, using TPR, changing tones, using the correct language level for each student, and making examples when the student doesn't know what to do.

It is also important that you have the following:

  • A working headset and webcam
  • A tidy background and proper lighting
  • A stable internet connection (Ethernet is highly recommended)
  • 2 relevant props for the demo material

Areas your performance will NOT be judged on are:

  • Finishing all of the demo material in the allotted 8 minutes. However, it is imperative that you use your time wisely to show us as much of your teaching skills as you can.
  • Having full command of all the platform functions. You will be trained on how to use all of these functions if you move forward to the training portion of the process.

This is a very important step in the process, as this is your chance to show off your teaching skills and teaching personality for the first time.

We asked a few of our interviewers for tips on how to give us your best demo performance!

1.  Have Fun!

"The most important thing we want to see is your "teaching personality". That means your energy and passion. We have very young learners, so lessons are normally simplified. You need to make them a bit more fun, and make those kiddos relax, because they can be shy sometimes." - Magic Interviewer Nenna

2. Come Prepared!

"Take note of your student’s level and adjust your sentence length and vocabulary accordingly. As soon as you book your interview, you get access to the demo material. Make sure you come prepared and know all the teaching directions on each slide and have two relevant props." - Magic Interviewer Jewel

3. Take Note of Student Level!

"Treat me like a child (not adult) who is struggling with the English language. Make sure to correct mistakes, explain words in  create way, and most important of all, don't be afraid to be silly. We like silly. Silly will get you hired." - Magic Interviewer Nik

4. Teach with Passion!

"Passion and a colorful personality are greatly valued at Magic Ears, so don't be afraid to show your personality, get a little goofy and let it all hang out. Having an Ethernet cord and stable internet connection will make for a smoother demo experience." - Magic Interviewer Marcos

5. Use Your Time Wisely

"Don't make the interviewer sing the warm up song! In regular classes, this is just an introduction to the class for the students, and we do not make them read or sing. This can take up quite some time, as your students' level is not going to be strong enough to fluently sing the whole song. We would rather see you utilizing your time to demonstrate your skills in other areas of the class material. Just play the song once and move on." - Magic Interviewer Carley
